Liverpool are in ‘first place’ to sign Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer.
That’s according to Tuttosport who claim that Liverpool have been following the Brazilian ‘with great interest’ for the last three years.
The Reds aren’t the only team reported to be interested in Bremer though, far from it. Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Pep Guardiola’s, Manchester City, are also claimed to be in the running.
Tuttosport report that the defender has been attending English classes twice a week. They claim that this could potentially be in preparation for a move to England.
The Premier League sides are reportedly joined by Inter, AC Milan, Juventus and Napoli in hoping to snare Bremer.
Old links resurface
Bremer will be a name many Liverpool fans are already familiar with. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Merseyside numerous times in the last year or so.
As far back as February 2021, The Mirror were reporting that the Torino player was Liverpool’s ‘top summer transfer target.’
Those links have persisted despite Liverpool signing Ibrahima Konate for £35m prior to this season.
In that respect, Tuttosport’s claim that Liverpool have been keeping tabs on Bremer for three years make sense.
In December transfer expert Fabrizio Romano called Bremer ‘incredible’ and claimed that he was in The Reds list before signing Konate. However, by all accounts the Frenchman was at the top of that list and Liverpool managed to secure the player they wanted the most.
Future proofing
Konate’s arrival doesn’t mean that the interest in Bremer is no longer there. Liverpool currently have a cohort of top defenders, but Joe Gomez’s future has been cast into doubt by his lack of gametime.
Were the England international to leave Anfield, Liverpool would need to replace him.
As Bremer is predominantly a left-sided centre back, he could be a good option to deputise for Virgil Van Dijk.
Konate has played all of his games for Liverpool as the right-sided central defender. If Liverpool were to need a replacement for Gomez, it’s easy to see where Bremer would fit in.
