Jordan Henderson is hopeful that Mohamed Salah will sign a new contract at Liverpool.

The Liverpool captain was appearing on BT Sport’s Between The Lines (13mins 40secs) with Rio Ferdinand.

After a wide-ranging interview, discussion turned to Salah. Ferdinand asked Henderson if his teammate is the best player in the world at the moment.

“For me yeah, but I’ll be biased wont I,” said Henderson.

“But for me he’s been phenomenal for a number of seasons. The numbers that he’s got – goals, assists. But even his general play, his work rate for the team, his leadership within the group, he’s an outstanding player and hopefully he can just keep going from strength to strength and help us to be more successful in the future.”

Ferdinand then offered a cheeky remark about Salah’s current contract situation.

“Any sign of that new deal?” asked Rio.

“That’d be nice,” replied Henderson with a grin as the pair chuckled.

It certainly would be, Hendo.

The Egyptian King

Although Henderson is biased, and we probably are too, there isn’t a better player in the world at the moment than Salah.

Despite that, the Egyptian has been consistently overlooked for the top prizes in football.

Just last week, Salah was lamenting the fact that he finished a lowly seventh in the Ballon d’Or last year.

He also failed to make the FIFA Men’s World XI, which judging from his recent comments, upset him.

However, those at Anfield know his worth all too well.

Although he looked slightly off the boil in Saturday’s win over West Ham United, he was a constant threat to the Hammers defence.

His 17 league goals so far make him an almost certainty to win the Premier League Golden Boot for a third time this season.

All this makes Salah’s contract extension, a lack of it, a huge worry to Liverpool fans.

There hasn’t been any news for a little while. If the season ends without sign of a resolution, fans will become nervous that he may be due for a summer exit.

That would be unthinkable for a man who has 152 goals in 236 games for Liverpool. Let’s hope we get some good news from the club soon.
