‘Hard to find’: Fabinho says one of his Liverpool teammates could become the best player ever in his position

Fabinho has said that Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold can become a footballing legend.

The 28-year-old was speaking to the press via Blood Red: Liverpool FC on YouTube ahead of Liverpool’s game against Inter Milan tomorrow.

Asked what he made of his teammate’s recent form for Liverpool, Fabinho made a big claim.

“When I see Trent play, it’s really hard to find a right-back who plays like this, who looks more like a number eight or a number 10 than a right back,” said Fabinho.

“I hope he will continue to play like this, at a high level, because he can be one of the best right-backs in history – maybe the best. Hopefully he will keep playing like this.”

It certainly isn’t a comment that comes without merit. Trent has been ludicrously creative this season for Liverpool. He leads the Premier League assists chart with 11 to his name.

He also has a further five across all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Fabinho himself deputised at right-back earlier in his career. He still plays there at times for Brazil, so he knows a thing or two about how to play the position well.

The new normal

When talking about the 23-year-old, it’s easy to become blase about the numbers. It’s easy to forget that this is a right-back we’re talking about.

In terms of purely creative figures, Alexander-Arnold is redefining his position. In this respect, he is surely already up there with the best in history.

But the stats only really tell half the story. Klopp’s Liverpool are a thrilling side to watch and will go down as one of the greatest that the continent has ever seen.

At the fulcrum of it is Alexander-Arnold. He is the team’s creative force. Mohamed Salah provides the most goals, Virgil Van Dijk is impervious at the back and Fabinho himself is a destroyer of unbelievable quality.

But Liverpool don’t rely on any of them quite like they rely on the England international.

To watch him popping up in central midfield areas or creating in the number 10 position, as he often does, is one of football’s great sights.

The scary thing is that at 23, he still has room to improve, as Jurgen Klopp pointed out after the win against West Ham United on Saturday.

The insinuation is that he can take his game to yet another level. If he does, there won’t be another right-back, past or present, who comes close.
