Liverpool reportedly against Super League plans as talk emerges again

Liverpool hold a clear stance on the Super League, according to reports. Talk is once again growing with plans set to come to light soon.

This comes from the Telegraph. They’re one of several outlets claiming that Super League talks are back on the menu – and we’ll likely hear about it a lot over the coming weeks.

Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid still back the idea and haven’t given up on the Super League. They’ll fight UEFA over the plans and hope to find a way to make it all work.

But that doesn’t mean they’ll get their way. They require the other ‘founding members’ to push forward, too, or they legally can’t actually do anything. That means six Premier League clubs – including Liverpool – as well as Inter, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid have a voice here.

And the Telegraph claims that all six Premier League clubs are against the Super League. The ridiculous attempt to make things work a year ago appears to have put them off entirely.

This is never going away, essentially. That doesn’t mean it’ll ever actually happen but the likes of Juventus, Real and Barcelona will forever push for the closed shop that guarantees them success in spite of themselves.

We can only hope that Liverpool and others do stand strong against this because public opinion won’t have changed. It’s a terrible idea that rips football apart and tapes it back together as a hollow American-ised cash-cow for a select few clubs. Or, more specifically, their owners.

Unfortunately, FSG tried to include Liverpool in the Super League once before. That doesn’t fill us with the utmost confidence that they won’t try again. It’s up to fans – those who quite clearly do actually like football without the need for a Super League – to stand up to it whenever possible.

It is worth mentioning that last year saw a historic agreement with the Spirit of Shankly supporters group that should make Liverpool’s inclusion very difficult. Let’s just hope that holds true.
