Danny Murphy thinks that Mohamed Salah is still underrated by the media.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Liverpool midfielder said that Salah will only be appreciated once he’s gone.
“He (Salah) is still not appreciated enough. He will be when he goes,” Murphy said.
“The goals he’s scoring, the records he’s breaking, none of them are from a centre forward position, they’re from playing as a winger. Yes it’s in a 4-3-3 so he’s got a bit more protection, but he’s still playing on the wing.”
It’s a really good point from the pundit.
Salah’s goalscoring prowess is well-known. He is a two time Premier League Golden Boot winner with designs on adding the hat-trick this year.
He also holds the records for the most goals scored in a Premier League season with 32.
But not enough is made of the face that all this has been whilst playing on the wing.
He is often faced with the opposition goalkeeper as Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota come deep, but he still spends the majority of his time out wide.
One of the greatest ever
Murphy stressed that he believes Salah to be underrated by the media, not the fans. The former England man thinks that the fans know exactly how good the 29-year-old is.
“In terms of trying to put into perspective what he’s doing at the moment in terms of his numbers and the contribution he’s having to that team, will be more valued when he’s gone than it is now,” Murphy reiterated.
“The fans love him, of course they do.”
Murphy also claimed that Salah, who now has 25 goals for Liverpool this season, would get into his all time Liverpool eleven.
“The best compliment I can give him – I was asked pretty recently to do a best Liverpool eleven of all-time and he got in it,” said the 44-year-old.
When you consider the players who have played for The Reds in his position, it really is a big compliment for Salah.
Murphy won’t be the only one putting Salah’s name into his all-time eleven’s, either.
150 not out
The Egyptian’s goal against Norwich on Saturday was his 150th goal for Liverpool. That made him the second quickest to that number in club history, behind only the late “Sir” Roger Hunt. Exalted company.
Salah has of course seen plenty of plaudits come his way after his spectacular performances this season. But Murphy is right to highlight a feeling of a lack of recognition.
Just yesterday, Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller reminded us how ludicrous it was that Salah was left out of FIFA World XI earlier this season.
It’s probable that Murphy is right and the number 11 will only get his due once he has finished playing. Let’s hope that’s a long while yet though – get that contract signed, Mo!
