‘He’s capable’: Joe Gomez claims Liverpool star has the ability to become one of the best PL players ever

Joe Gomez says Liverpool centre-back partner Virgil Van Dijk can become a Premier League great.

Speaking to the Premier League’s YouTube channel as part of their “Uncut” series, The Reds defender covered a variety of topics.

Gomez was asked to picked a defender for his fantasy 5-a-side. After considering some other legendary names, the 24-year-old settled on his current teammate.

“Obviously Liverpool have had some great centre-halves, Carragher, Hyypia, Daniel Agger and so on,” said Gomez.

“But for me, Virg (Van Dijk) I think is going be looked at in the all time Premier League greats, let alone Liverpool.”

The England international also namechecked Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand as being an inspiration to him.

But he thinks that in time, Van Dijk will be looked back on in the same light as the six-time Premier League winner.

“I’ve said on record Rio was an inspiration for me, being from South East, the career he had, the style of play for sure he’s up there,” said Gomez.

“But for me I still think Virg is capable of being in that category.”

Back to his best

There’s no question that it has taken Van Dijk the opening months of the season to get back up to speed for Liverpool.

After missing 10 months of action, that was always going to be the case.

But Wednesday night’s victory over Inter Milan looked to herald the return of the Dutchman’s very best form.

He was impenetrable next to Ibrahima Konate as Liverpool weathered a storm from the Italian champions.

Liverpool have only conceded three times in the last nine games. Van Dijk has played every minute during that run.

Klopp said recently that he thought his number 4 was finally showing the kind of form that led him to a runners-up spot in the 2019 Ballon d’or.

“He is completely back on track, he is absolutely at his best again”, the manager said via RTE after The Reds 1-0 win over Burnley last Sunday.”

“I would say it’s good timing because the decisive part of the season is coming up now. Long may it continue.”

We’d echo that. When Virgil is in this kind of form, there are few better sights in world football.
