'I'm doing my very best': Virgil van Dijk addresses criticism coming his way

Virgil van Dijk says he’s doing his ‘very best’ right now as he talked about criticism heading his way. The Liverpool star has been fighting back from injury this season.

Virgil van Dijk missed nearly the entirety of last season with a horrible knee injury. Liverpool just weren’t the same team without him – nowhere near, really – and there was a real concern that he wouldn’t return the same player.

After all, Van Dijk is now 30 and losing such a long period of his career could have an effect. He left the pitch as undisputedly the world’s best defender but could he return like that?

Virgil van Dijk returns from injury

Honestly, Van Dijk has been fantastic this season, considering it’s his return from a long-term injury. He hasn’t been perfect, no, but we still wouldn’t swap him for anyone else right now.

But ‘perfect’ was essentially the level Van Dijk was at. That’s led to some criticism from certain corners who feel he’s not what he once was.

And Van Dijk addressed that criticism to De Telegraaf this week, saying he’s almost brought it on himself.

“I don’t mind; I’ve set the bar high myself,” he told De Telegraaf. “When you are on the pitch, everyone thinks you are 100 per cent, and I understand that too.

One Player Who Should REJECT Your Club

“Whether you have been ill or were out of action for a year due to a serious injury does not count for the outside world.

“You have won all those awards, and so that has become the standard. But I’m doing my very best at this club and try to play the best game I can every week.

“There have definitely been moments when things could have been better. But I am also a human being, and everyone makes mistakes.”

It’s the perfect response, really. Van Dijk admits he set the bar incredibly high for himself and that he can only strive to reach it again. But we don’t think the Dutchman is far off at all – give it a month or two and we have little doubt that Van Dijk is comfortably the best in the world again.
