‘I’m not having it’: Rio Ferdinand jumps to ‘fantastic’ Liverpool player’s defence over 14 second video clip

Rio Ferdinand has defended Virgil Van Dijk after a “mean” video of the Liverpool player was sent to him.

The video was sent during Ferdinand’s Vibe with Five YouTube show. A fellow host of the show sent him the clip of The Reds centre-back as they discussed which player’s Ferdinand could compare himself to in the modern game.

After saying he could see “elements” of himself in Van Dijk’s game, he was told to watch the 14 second video.

But despite the claims of his co-host, Ferdinand stood firm in his praise of Liverpool’s towering number four.

“You can pick those type of situations out of every single player and you can produce a mean clip like that,” said the former Manchester United man.

“Steve’s sent us a clip there hammering Van Dijk, I’m not having it.”

Ferdinand correctly went on to say that you can produce a short video of any player in world football to make them look bad.

“Every single player in the world you can pick out problems in their game and go ‘oh look at that clip there he looks horrendous’. I’d have loads!”

Too right, Rio!

Van Dijk still getting up to speed

It has obviously been a huge boost to Liverpool to have Van Dijk back fit this season.

A massive part of the reason last season fell apart was because of the 30-year-old’s absence. His presence alone seems to spread calm throughout the team.

Despite that, he continues to look slightly short of his imperious best. While this is perfectly understandable, seeing him looking flustered at times has taken some getting used to.

The Reds still boast one of the best defences in the league. For the most part, Joel Matip has been fantastic alongside Virgil. Alisson is also having an excellent season between the sticks.

Although he has had his occasional difficulties, Van Dijk still remains the best centre-back in the game. Recent displays have been better and after Liverpool’s last Premier League game he drew praise from a player who knew a thing or two about bamboozling defenders.

During his playing days, Ronaldinho made some of the best defenders around look like Sunday league players.

Following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in January, the Brazilian took to Instagram to call The Reds’ man “fantastic” (via The Mirror).

With six months or so of playing time now behind him following his injury, expect Virgil to get somewhere near his best as the season reaches its crescendo.
