‘Fantastic’ player may actually have passed medical at Liverpool, but then decided not to sign – journalist

Liverpool could have missed out on signing Fabio Carvalho because the 19-year-old ‘had cold feet’ about moving to the club.

That’s a version put forward on the “The Transfer Window” podcast today (13mins in).

“One version of events I’ve heard is that Carvalho, who is represented primarily by his brother, passed a medical on Monday night and then had cold feet about signing the contract,” said journalist Duncan Castles, co-host of the show.

“(Carvalho) Had reservations over whether Liverpool was the right place for him to go and held off long enough that the deal fell through.”

Castles claims that Carvalho’s apparent delays were sufficient that the paperwork for the player’s loan back to Fulham couldn’t be completed.

The journalist does, however, go on to put forward an alternate reason as to why the transfer failed.

“The other version [of events heard] was that it was simply a timing process. It wasn’t that Carvalho had reservations, it was simply a matter of timing,” he said.

What did Liverpool miss out on

It’s likely that a lot of Liverpool fans weren’t aware of Carvalho before the January window. But the player quickly became a key target for The Reds.

Carvalho’s seven goals and four assists this season make him one of the standout youngsters in the country.

A quick viewing of his highlights reels and you can see why Liverpool fans were excited at the prospect of him joining the club.

His manager, Marco Silva, even called him “fantastic” via West London Sport earlier on in the campaign.

Although there are mixed messages here, there are reports that Liverpool maintain a hope of bringing Carvalho to Merseyside in the summer window (The Mirror).

It’s of course possible that the player did pull the plug on the deal. But we struggle to believe that any young player wouldn’t jump at the chance to work with Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s array of stars.
