Chelsea are prepared to rival Liverpool for Fabio Carvalho after a transfer to the Reds broke down, according to reports. They’re not the only ones, however.

As per the Athletic, Liverpool saw a move for Fabio Carvalho break down at the last minute on Monday evening. It’s a deal that went right to the deadline but the Reds and Fulham simply ran out of time.

Now, says Goal, Chelsea are one of three clubs looking to rival Liverpool for the playmaker. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund also see an opportunity to sign a massively talented 19-year-old.

Liverpool face Fabio Carvalho competition

This feels inevitable given Carvalho’s situation. He’s a player in wonderful form right now, which will bring interest, and his contract actually expires in June.

It’s why a transfer actually benefitted Fulham. They could have secured a transfer fee for Carvalho, which is no longer a guarantee. Should he move to another English club, they’re entitled to compensation through a tribunal but a move to Bayern or Dortmund would leave them with nothing.

And so Liverpool are far and away the most palatable option here. Not only will they offer money to Fulham but they’re not a local rival like Chelsea.

There’s no guarantee that Liverpool can get their man, though. In fact, it’s not in anyone’s hands but Carvalho’s – he’s got his pick of clubs now.

It appears that Liverpool can feel confident, however. Jurgen Klopp is key here, according to James Pearce, with Carvalho hoping to work with him.

But we’ll have to wait. Liverpool can’t offer a pre-contract for another few months, so this one will run and run and the potential is there for other clubs to get involved.

We’re still a little confident that Carvalho will be a Liverpool player but it’s far from certain.
