Liverpool and their rivals all made deals happen in the January transfer window. Here are three players we’d have liked to see at Anfield.
Julian Alvarez
Manchester City paid £14m to sign Julian Alvarez on deadline day – though, he remains with River Plate on loan until the summer. Pep Guardiola’s team will hope this is a long-term investment into an elite talent, though.
And perhaps Liverpool will regret this one a little. We never saw any serious links to the Reds but maybe there should have been?
We wrote back in November that this is one Liverpool should have had eyes on as Alvarez has looked like a complete no.9 this season. He scored for fun in Argentina, while also sitting 6th for assists in the Primera Division.
And with Divock Origi out of contract in the summer, will Liverpool find a better out-and-out no.9 to replace him? Alvarez could have been a young player to develop who didn’t need first-XI football from the get-go and for only £14m.
Donny van de Beek
Okay, so this one was never going to happen. Manchester United and Liverpool don’t do business and the Dutchman is off to Everton for the rest of the season.
But Donny van de Beek remains a player we think fits Liverpool. At his best, he’s an all-action midfielder who can do a bit of everything and burst into the box to get goals. It’s the kind of role that’s worked wonderfully under Jurgen Klopp.
In fact, we wrote back in September 2020 that Van de Beek would be a good fit for Liverpool – and that he probably wasn’t for United.
Dejan Kulusevski
Tutto Juve linked Liverpool with Dejan Kulusevski back in the summer, along with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. Spurs, of course, have got the player six months later.

In truth, it’s one that no longer makes sense for Liverpool after they signed Luis Diaz this month – the Reds got their extra depth on the wing. But we still think Kulusevski remains a very interesting player at 21 and one with who Klopp could have worked wonders.
His 18-month loan with Spurs makes any transfer to Liverpool a long way off, of course. Kulusevski is one to watch, though, and remains someone who is a good fit for the Reds.
