Liverpool should join growing list of clubs looking at Julian Alvarez

The hype continues to grow around Argentine striker Julian Alvarez. It might be time for Liverpool to register an interest.

Julian Alvarez is a name you’ll likely here a lot more of over the coming years. The 21-year-old is making a serious name for himself in Argentina right now.

Alvarez currently plays for River Plate, where he’s leading the forward line in his first full season. He essentially lost a season out of career after Argentinian football was suspended with the pandemic.

But now he’s truly showing what he can do. And what he can do is pretty fantastic.

Alvarez is the top scorer in the Primeira Liga with 15 goals in 16 games. He’s got another five assists, too, which is the joint-most in the division.

This isn’t a fluke, either. Alvarez is proving to have a real knack at getting into good positions, leading the league in goals, goals per 90, shots per 90, shots on target per 90 and in combined goals and assists.

And we say he’s played 16 but his combined minutes actually add up to 13.2 games. As a result, Alvarez currently averages 1.5 goals or assists per 90.

It’s also worth pointing out that none of these goals were penalties. In fact, the only penalty Alvarez took this season he missed. The youngster is a true threat from open play.

Julian Alvarez – Liverpool target?

Interest in Alvarez is really heating up. Per Sportmediaset, Fiorentina, AC Milan and Juventus all have eyes on him. And that’s just in Italy.

There’s an extra reason for the interest, too. Alvarez’s contract expires in December 2022, meaning River will naturally consider a sale for the right price. That price will likely be under the striker’s real value, too.

And Liverpool may well see that as a fine deal to make. After all, the Reds could use a new out-and-out number nine, as well as extra youth up front.

Alvarez truly has the makings of someone who will explode in value once they move to Europe. He’s scoring goals for fun in a season that should really only be a learning experience for him.

If this is his lowest level, there could be a truly special player on the way with the right development. And we’d back Liverpool to give Alvarez just that.
