Fabio Carvalho won’t move to Liverpool this season because of EFL rules around the transfer deadline. The Reds must wait on this one.
It seemed that Liverpool would sign Fabio Carvalho to wrap up their transfer window. It turns out that won’t be possible, however, because of EFL rules.
Per the Athletic, they didn’t get the deal done in time. Now, the Premier League allows clubs to file a ‘deal sheet’ that proves a transfer is all but sorted, granting extra time beyond the deadline.
The EFL doesn’t have such a process, however. Liverpool and Fulham needed to sort this before 11pm but were unable to do so. As a result, Carvalho remains with the Cottagers until the end of the season.

Liverpool’s reasoning for wanting Carvalho was obvious. The 19-year-old is playing wonderfully right now and is out of contract in the summer.
Signing him now avoided competition once that contract expires – competition that will only grow with his current form. Liverpool would need to pay a tribunal fee if they agreed a pre-contract, though, much as they did with Harvey Elliott and Danny Ings.
Foreign clubs don’t need to pay such a fee – an important reason for Fulham wanting to push this deal through now. They now run a risk of losing a hugely talented player for absolutely nothing.
They’ll hope he signs a new contract, then. More likely, Liverpool push for a transfer through tribunal at the end of the season once Carvalho’s contract expires.
So in that sense, this isn’t a massive blow. But Liverpool will still need to fight off competition they otherwise wouldn’t have. That puts the deal in doubt but surely, the Reds remain favourites to sign Carvalho permanently.
They’ll just need to wait a little longer.
