Liverpool recently rejected a bid from Newcastle United for Nat Phillips, according to reports. The Reds remain open to a sale.
This comes from the Liverpool Echo. They claim Newcastle United did make an offer for Nat Phillips recently but Liverpool said no.
They don’t mention the monetary value of the offer just the structure – a loan with an obligation to buy. The catch here, though, was that the obligation only kicks in if Newcastle avoid relegation.
That certainly makes sense for the Magpies but Liverpool didn’t want to take that chance. They’ll instead hold out for a guarantee of their £12m+ asking price.
Liverpool reject Newcastle bid for Nat Phillips
It certainly sounds as though Liverpool want that clause changed then. If they can get a guarantee, they’ll sell but they won’t risk it all on Newcastle’s ability to stay in the Premier League.
And that makes sense. If Newcastle failed and suffered relegation, Phillips’ value would fall considerably. If they stayed up, he’d actually be worth more than whatever Liverpool want now. No wonder they said no, then.
But the stance here is clear and has been for some time – offer Liverpool want they want and Phillips can leave this month. Newcastle have a few more days to decide just how much they want the player and whether they see a £12m value, too.

We know Liverpool will stick rigidly to that value. This is a player Jurgen Klopp reportedly loves, after all, and we firmly believe that Phillips is worth that asking price.
Some Newcastle United fans also see it that way, with Phillips perhaps being their best value-for-money option right now. If that is the case, they’ve got until Monday to meet Liverpool’s valuation.
And with the Reds looking unlikely to do anymore business, this will be the big story of the window.
