Some Newcastle fans want Nat Phillips as Diego Carlos talks reportedly collapse

Some Newcastle United fans have firmly turned their sights to Nat Phillips. This comes as a pursuit for Diego Carlos reportedly falters.

Newcastle United aren’t having an easy go of things, despite their newfound wealth. The Magpies quite clearly want a centre-back but their two primary targets have sat behind roadblocks.

Sven Botman appeared to be target no.1 but the Athletic reported back on January 10th that Lille wouldn’t sell. Attention then turned to Diego Carlos of Sevilla but the Daily Mail – among others – now say talks are faltering.

That’s because Sevilla want around £40m for Carlos, a price far higher than Newcastle thought they’d pay. The Mail now claims that Nat Phillips is a potential target in the final week of the transfer window.

And it’s one that Newcastle fans appear to be warming to.

LEAVE RASHFORD ALONE.

Now, Phillips could apparently leave, per the Athletic. That wouldn’t exactly surprise anyone – he can’t get in the team these days. A transfer, especially to a club the size of Newcastle, would be a wonderful career move.

It’s been quite 12 months, though. This time last year, Liverpool were frantically trying to sign just about anyone to replace Phillips. A sensational end to the season, however, saw Phillips undergo ‘unbelievable’ development – in the words of Jurgen Klopp.

Phillips proved himself as a Premier League-level centre-back and, it turns out, someone good enough for a Champions League side. It’s simply a case of there being too much elite competition at Anfield for the 24-year-old.

We’ll see what the next few days hold, then. Honestly, we’d like to see Phillips get a move like this and he’d almost certainly be a fine signing for Newcastle at this stage. They’d get a hard-working player with decent experience and someone who has met every challenge put in front of him – even those that looked impossible.

As long as Liverpool can get a decent price, that is.
