Some Liverpool fans are very, very unhappy at transfer reports that Tottenham Hotspur could sign Luis Diaz. The Colombian winger has long been linked with the Reds.

Sky Sports report that Tottenham Hotspur could sign Luis Diaz before the transfer window closes. They claim that a £46m bid is ready – and they’re far from the only source claiming that.

This would be a massive move for Spurs as Diaz is one of the brightest wingers in Europe right now. The 25-year-old has 14 goals in 18 Primeira Liga games for FC Porto this season, with another two in the Champions League.

But it was his efforts for Colombia over the summer that really caught the eye. Diaz finished as joint-top scorer at the Copa America alongside Lionel Messi, including a sensational goal against Argentina in the semi-finals.

It’s no surprise, then, that a club like Tottenham would want Diaz. There’s potentially a world-class winger here and £46m could end up looking like a bargain.

And that, understandably, as some Liverpool fans a little wound up. There have been reports dating back months now that link the Reds with Diaz. Fabrizio Romano claims Liverpool scouted him three times this season, in fact.

Thus some fans feel potentially losing out on Diaz to Spurs is a poor reflection on the club right now.

Liverpool to miss out on Luis Diaz transfer

The Athletic say Liverpool value Diaz at around half of his £67m release clause. Honestly, £34m for Diaz sounds like roughly the right price here – but that £46m fee isn’t exactly a world away.

But the Reds are in a strange position. Signing Diaz made all the sense in the world ahead of AFCON but that’s not a factor anymore. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane should be back for the next Premier League game.

We also think Salah is a huge factor here. His contract isn’t sorted and spending £40m+ on a left winger doesn’t make much sense if he leaves. His departure would necessitate a massive signing on the other flank – we’d rather Liverpool saved cash for that.

But we can understand the frustration. Diaz is an exciting talent and watching him join Spurs isn’t easy. We’ll just have to hope that, as we’ve seen in the past, Liverpool are right in their valuation.
