Liverpool could face criticism from fans as Tottenham Hotspur reportedly push for Luis Diaz. Spurs’ bid isn’t exactly massive.

It seems that Liverpool could miss out on Luis Diaz, after all. There have been reports linking the two for some time, with Journal de Noticias claiming in November that the Reds liked the Colombian.

Reports, primarily from Portugal, continued to grow from there and it did feel as though Liverpool could move in January. Fabrizio Romano said earlier this month, for one, that the club scouted Diaz three times in 2021. They’re ‘serious’ with their interest, too.

But there was a hitch and it’s the same hitch there always is – money. The Athletic reported that Porto wanted Diaz’s full £67m release clause in order to sell. Liverpool, however, value the player at half of that.

This is why Tuesday’s news is notable. Sky Sports are one of many reporting that Tottenham Hotspur want Diaz and are ready to pay £46m for him. They hope that’s enough to get Porto down from their £50m price.

If true, Liverpool could end up looking foolish.

Liverpool taking Luis Diaz risk

So Liverpool supposedly rate Diaz highly and want him at the club. At the same time, they only value him at around £34m.

It sounds as though Porto will sell for just £16m more than that, though. Spurs certainly get that idea if they’re ready to tempt with a £46m offer that, presumably, they expect will get the transfer done.

If they’re right, Liverpool will lose out on a ‘serious’ target over just £12m. That’s not exactly a lot of money for what Diaz could be.

The Colombian was the joint-top scorer at Copa America alongside Lionel Messi, which included a sensational goal against Argentina in the semi-finals. Diaz has followed that with 14 goals in 18 Primeira Liga games from the left wing. On paper, he’s a 25-year-old superstar. Liverpool appear to believe that’s true if they’re taking him this seriously.

But it also seems that £12m is enough to put them off. If Diaz does enough up being a star, the Reds will look incredibly foolish over that stance.

Fans already appear nervous over this one. The criticism will only increase if Liverpool get this one wrong.
