Jurgen Klopp says Andy Robertson is ‘absolutely’ Europe’s best left-back

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool have Europe’s best left-back in Andy Robertson. The Scot was flying against Arsenal on Thursday.

Liverpool put in a wonderful team performance on Thursday to beat Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates. Diogo Jota scored both goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold assists but the duo weren’t the only Reds who shone.

Jurgen Klopp got wonderful performances from several Liverpool players, even if those two were the standout talents. One of those who shone without contributing to a goal was Andy Robertson.

Robertson did just about everything you can ask for from a left-back. He won three tackles, made three interceptions and three clearances. The Scot even won three headers, while he created one chance and had two shots.

Statistically, given Liverpool won with a clean-sheet, he was pretty much perfect. Arsenal couldn’t get the better of Robertson, no matter what they tried.

It’s hardly surprising, then, that Klopp labelled Robertson Europe’s best in his position. We certainly struggle to argue with that take.

“For me, absolutely [Robertson is the best],” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com. “Outstanding player and, again, the mix of his skillset and his mentality, that makes him so special.

“You see the situations when he has the ball that he is a good footballer but the desire in each game when he really wants to defend with all he has, I think that’s the biggest improvement since he arrived.”

There are some great left-backs across Europe right now but we’re not sure any match Robertson. Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich, for instance, has an elite skill set, though doesn’t deliver on either end the way Liverpool’s no.26 does.

Joao Cancelo does have a case, of course. The Manchester City man has moved across into the role this season and looks fantastic – we’d want to see him maintain those standards for over a year before comparing him to Robertson, though.

In terms of consistency, success and peaks, we’re putting Robertson above them all. He’s been sensational since arriving for £8m in 2017, maintaining an incredible level for nearly five years. The Scot is playing brilliantly right now and, in our mind, fully deserves the tag of Europe’s best.
