Report: Liverpool look to hijack move for £70m 23-year-old who is ‘top of Chelsea’s transfer list’

A report from Spain this morning says Liverpool are interested in bring Jules Kounde to Anfield.

According to Marca, the Frenchman has been slightly below par this season. But that hasn’t stopped Jurgen Klopp from reportedly wanting to add him to his Liverpool squad.

Picking up the story, The Mirror claim that the centre-back is rated at around £70m by Sevilla. This would make the deal seem unlikely from a Liverpool point of view.

But it isn’t the first time Kounde has been said to be of interest to The Reds. He was one of the many names doing the rounds when Liverpool were in the midst of a centre-back crisis last winter.

That crisis has been solved by the signing of Ibrahima Konate. But Joe Gomez’s future has been up in the air recently. That could be one of the reasons why Marca suggest that Klopp may still be in the market for a central defender.

Stepping on Chelsea’s toes

Kounde was expected to join Chelsea last summer. Just last week he was even described as being “still top of their transfer list”.

They could lose all of Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta for nothing in six months time. That would make Chelsea’s links to Kounde slightly more credible at this stage. The Blues also have far greater resources than Liverpool.

But the player is clearly one of the top prospects in his position. He has already become a fixture in the notoriously strong French national squad.

If Liverpool could steal him from underneath the noses of a Premier League title rival, it would be double the reason to celebrate, however steep the price.
