Liverpool may find themselves with an advantage if they choose to chase Jules Kounde this summer. The race promises to be fierce, however.
Jules Kounde is one of the best young defenders around and Liverpool, reportedly, want a defender. In fact, it’s pretty clear they do.
Liverpool signed Ozan Kabak on loan this January, after all, with an option to buy. It suggests they plan on adding a defender to their squad permanently but it may not be the Turkish international.
And if Liverpool wanted to go all-out on a player, Kounde would be at the top of their list. We have no reason to believe they are looking to sign the player but he’s undoubtedly a massive talent.
Just 22, Kounde is coming up on four seasons of regular football in a top European league. He’s shone consistently, too, and helped Sevilla win the Europa League last term.
It’s no surprise, then, that Europe’s elite are reportedly lining up. La Razon reports that Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United all want Kounde.
His price? Up to £78m. No, not a cheap option.
And that might be why Liverpool don’t hold interest. Do they really need to put up that kind of cash in their position? They’re not looking for a first-choice defender, after all.
But perhaps they don’t need to put up that money. Perhaps they have a way of lowering it.
Fichajes claims that Sevilla want Takumi Minamino. Now, the report has his price-tag at £8.5m – we think that’s low.
And anything higher, say closer to £15m, would take a huge chunk out of that Kounde price. Liverpool, then, may have one foot forward in that race, should they choose to enter.
They could secure him for a smaller price by including Minamino in any deal, or simply doing that deal alongside one for Kounde. He’s not a player Liverpool use – so little that he’s out at Southampton – but he could prove useful here.
As we say, Liverpool may find this deal too pricey regardless. But if they did fancy a shot at Kounde, Minamino could really help them out.
