Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports that Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger would be perfect for Liverpool – and he could have a point.
The defender is out of contract in the summer and several big-name clubs are chasing the World Cup winner.
Rudiger is no closer to penning a new deal at Stamford Bridge and this season could be his last at Chelsea.
Last night, he scored as the Blues defeated Tottenham 1-0 to reach the Carabao Cup Final following a 3-0 aggregate scoreline.
After the game, Redknapp lauded him on Sky Sports, claiming he’d be perfect for Liverpool.
He said: “Every team would want him. You look at my team, Liverpool, and you could imagine him next to Virgil van Dijk at the back.”
Rudiger has been a quality player for Chelsea. He signed from Roma in 2017 and has made 177 appearances for the club.
Last season he helped Thomas Tuchel’s men lift the Champions League and he’s also won the FA Cup during his time at Chelsea.
His contract situation is a worry. Several top European teams are keen and Liverpool have to pounce on the Chelsea man.
Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk as their main man. It’s not completely beyond the realms of reality, however, that they’ll go for another defender in the summer.
Joel Matip is perhaps past his best and Ibrahima Konate is still working his way towards his very best form since arriving from RB Leipzig.
Nat Phillips is also part of the squad but he could be sold this month.
Class: Rudiger would be perfect for Liverpool
On a free transfer, Rudiger could be a shrewd signing by Liverpool boss Klopp.
He knows the Premier League, is playing some of the best football he’s ever played and wouldn’t cost the club a fortune in wages.
- TARGET: Liverpool linked player available at bargain price
It seems as though Liverpool won’t win the Premier League this season. As a result, they’ll want to increase the squad depth next season for a better assault on Manchester City.
That could make Rudiger ideal. Partnering him with Van Dijk could be a masterstroke and Klopp has to act.
