Jurgen Klopp moved to assure Liverpool fans over contract negotiations with Mohamed Salah on Wednesday. The Egyptian has 18 months left.
Mohamed Salah made headlines on Tuesday as GQ magazine published an interview with him. The Liverpool forward insisted they he wants to remain with the club – it’s just not in his hands.
Salah doesn’t believe he’s asking for anything ‘crazy’, either, and merely wants to be recognised for who he is. Liverpool just need to meet him on that, if they’re willing.
All in all, it’s a tense situation. Salah isn’t just the best player at Liverpool right now but arguably the best in the world. Here’s a chance for the Reds to secure such a talent long-term and yet there appears to be a holdup.
But with just 18 months left on his current deal, there’s pressure. No new contract would almost certainly mean a summer sale or Liverpool risk losing Salah for nothing in 2023. That only leaves a few months to sort this.
Jurgen Klopp, however, doesn’t believe there’s really anything to worry about here. The Liverpool boss responded to several questions about Salah in his Wednesday press conference.
“Nobody has to worry [about his contract], it’s just the situation we are in,” said Klopp. “Really, all fine.
“It’s not done, that’s why we didn’t get this news, but we are in talks. He’s a world-class player, an unbelievable player, great boy, did a lot of great stuff for Liverpool and of course we want to keep him.
“Now let’s see how it will work out. That’s all.”

Interestingly, Liverpool’s official website and Twitter account made a real thing of Klopp’s words here. They highlighted the fact he was addressing Salah’s future – an unusual step that brings attention to the situation.
Fans, certainly, hadn’t seen anything like it before.
‘Curious’ is what we’d call it, too. Liverpool haven’t really treated Salah and his contract as a big deal but they ‘officially’ have done here by adding extra focus to Klopp’s words.
We’re just unsure what it means, really. On the one hand, it could be a sign that positive news is coming – why bring attention to it, otherwise? On the other, it might be a little dig at FSG to pile some pressure on.
Either way, this is the big talking point at Liverpool right now. There’s no getting around that.
