88 passes, 2 dribbles: Tyler Morton has found his true place at Liverpool

Tyler Morton played out a fine 90 minutes for Liverpool against Shrewsbury Town on Sunday. The teenager appeared to find his place in the side.

Tyler Morton has experienced a rapid rise this season with Liverpool – and an unexpected one. Morton wasn’t exactly entirely off the radar to kick off the campaign but it wasn’t thought he’d play a real role at senior level.

A great debut at Norwich City thrust him into first-team thinking, however. Things have risen from there, with Morton even putting in a wonderful game against AC Milan at San Siro. We’ve seen starts against Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City, too, with admittedly mixed results.

Morton has really had a role as a holding midfielder up to now, usually in place of Fabinho. That changed on Sunday – he started alongside the Brazilian in a slightly more advanced role.

And that freedom appeared to benefit the 19-year-old. Morton looked like he found his true role for Liverpool.

Tyler Morton shines for Liverpool

Morton looked more confident than he has in a few games here. Perhaps that was the lower-league opposition or perhaps it was his role – the teenager didn’t have to sit as the last line of defence in midfield.

One Player Who Should REJECT Your Club

The result was Morton being able to burst forward, apply pressure and move the ball with less risk. He got heavily involved, completing 88 passes, for instance, one of which created a chance.

But all around, Morton looked good. He completed two dribbles out of two, won a tackle, won an interception, and completed 96% of his passes. You can’t ask for much more.

The best thing about his display, though, was how consistent it was. Morton barely put a foot wrong, no matter what he did. We think that’s a sign of his more advanced role – take the defensive pressure away from Morton and he looks far more comfortable.
