Liverpool will look at potentially signing a midfielder in a 2022 transfer window, according to reports. Aurelien Tchouameni is on their list.

This comes from the Athletic. Journalist David Ornstein claims Liverpool will look at midfielders this year – though, likely in the summer transfer window.

While there’s a little disappointment there (we’d like to see movement this month), the one name Ornstein gives is an exciting one. He mentioned AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as a Liverpool target.

The 21-year-old has exploded onto the scene over the last 18 months. He’s developed rapidly from a youngster with limited experience into one of Europe’s most promising players.

The midfielder was in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year last season, for instance, while he won France’s Young Player of the Year, too. His achievements forced Tchouameni into the French setup where he won the Nations League in 2021.

That saw Paul Pogba give his compatriot a glowing review after playing alongside Tchouameni.

“Pleasure to play next to him,” said Pogba. “He brings a lot of energy. A lot of energy, extraordinary technical and physical quality.”

Liverpool consider Aurelien Tchouameni transfer

This isn’t the first link between Tchouameni and Liverpool. We’ve written up our thoughts on him before, in fact – though, that was back in October.

But fast-forward to now and Tchouameni is still playing fantastically well. He’s maintaining of over 2.5 tackles and 2.5 interceptions per 90 in Ligue 1 – extraordinary numbers for a top-5 league. Let alone for a 21-year-old.

Liverpool will naturally have interest, then, but we do wonder what the plan would be. Tchouameni specialises in defending, which is Fabinho’s role in the side. The Brazilian is the last midfielder at the club who needs a replacement, however.

But perhaps Tchouameni is good enough for Liverpool to change their gameplan. Fabinho and Tchouameni? It would be a world-class defensive wall.
