Report: Liverpool believe Mohamed Salah contract could be imminent

Liverpool feel Mohamed Salah could agree a new contract soon, according to reports. The Reds have a timeframe in mind.

This comes from the Sunday World. They claim that Liverpool don’t expect to sign anyone in January, instead focusing their attention on the summer window.

Part of the reason why is that Liverpool would know the future of Mohamed Salah. Until they know exactly what’s happening with the Egyptian, it’s difficult to plan their next major signings.

Now, the Reds certainly plan on keeping Salah. In fact, they’re hopeful of agreeing a new contract ‘in the coming weeks’ and moving forward with their no.11 long-term.

The article doesn’t include potential figures on that contract but we have seen hints of them before. The Independent, for instance, claimed back in October that Salah wants wages on par with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne. That would be roughly £380k per week.

Such wages would make Salah the highest-paid player at Liverpool by some distance. Is he worth it? Almost certainly, yes.

Mohamed Salah to sign new Liverpool contract?

As frustrating as it is, there’s a lot of sense in waiting for Salah’s decision before signing new players. No, it’s not ideal but that’s the reality.

Because if Salah were to leave, Liverpool would need to tear up their plans and move forward with a major signing. We could even see a change of style with the forwards and a move away from the False 9 system. Perhaps a new arrival would be a traditional no.9, maybe simply a replacement winger – either way, it brings considerable change.

If he’s staying, they don’t need that blockbuster replacement. In fact, any major forward signing would play in a different position and with the deliberate need to play with Salah. Such a player could be entirely different to a replacement.

We’ll all have to wait and see, then. It does feel right now as though Liverpool won’t do business this month but if it results in a new contract for Salah, we won’t complain. Too much, anyway.
