Tyler Morton should be the next Liverpool player to secure a loan move. The 19-year-old looks a step away from being very special.
We’ve seen Tyler Morton really make a name for himself at Liverpool this season. Honestly, he wasn’t a player who was particularly prominent on the radar before this season but Jurgen Klopp has given him chances.
The first chance included a half-time appearance against Norwich City in the EFL Cup. That’s become small-time for Morton, though, who has since started in the Champions League and Premier League.
As for how he’s done, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Morton was pretty brilliant for a 19-year-old at San Siro, for instance, but struggled with the pace of the game at Tottenham Hotspur.
It’s led to some suggestions that Morton isn’t quite good enough. Or at least, not at the required level for Liverpool going forward.
Mark Lawrenson, for instance, told Off The Ball that Morton looked too lightweight and likely won’t make it at Anfield. We think that’s very premature – the 19-year-old just needs the right kind of development.
Tyler Morton could use a loan move
Morton clearly has talent – we’ve seen it at senior level. You don’t play as he did against AC Milan unless there’s something quality about you.
But there are clearly holes in his game, or at least a lack of experience, that only playing will fix. And the reality is that learning the pace of senior game is better done elsewhere.
We saw the improvement in Harvey Elliott last year, for instance. He returned to Liverpool a far more experienced player – one ready for the Premier League. Now, Morton might not have Elliott’s talent but he’s still someone who would benefit.
And Liverpool should consider it. Morton almost certainly won’t get the required number of games to get the experience he needs at Anfield. A loan, as we’ve seen before, could be the answer.
