‘A joke’: Liverpool fans make the same point on Andy Robertson red

Some Liverpool fans took to Twitter to make the same point after Andy Robertson saw red against Tottenham Hotspur. The Scot didn’t get the luck others were afforded.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur played out a crazy game on Sunday evening after a late blow before kick off. The Reds come away with complete frustration, however, after a series of refereeing decisions.

Should they have had a penalty in the first half? Arguably – it looked like one. But should Harry Kane have been sent off? Absolutely.

The England captain lunged in high on Andy Robertson, catching the Liverpool left-back high on the shin with his studs and completely missing the ball with everything but his arm. If Robertson hadn’t lifted his foot off the floor, it could have been horrendous.

Yellow card. It’s that kind of game, apparently.

But in the second half, a wild swing from Robertson missed the ball and cleaned out Emerson Royal. It wasn’t a lunge, it wasn’t studs up and it was a debatable red card. Yellow was arguably enough but you can understand the red.

It’s hard to understand how it’s a red when Kane’s wasn’t, however. And that was the same point Liverpool fans made on Twitter after the incident.

It’s shocking inconsistency, really. Kane’s challenge was awful and the yellow stood, which you can just about live with if Robertson gets the same treatment. Instead, the referee deemed it far worse.

Liverpool didn’t really have anywhere to go from there. Down to 10 men and at 2-2, the Reds were stuck between pressing high or sitting deep. It wasn’t really clear what to do against a Spurs side with their tails up.

In the end, Spurs got an advantage that Liverpool did not.
