Liverpool are big fans of Frenkie de Jong and will stand by on a potential transfer, according to reports. The Dutchman’s place at Barcelona is unclear.
This comes from Sport. They claim Liverpool – along with Bayern Munich – are waiting in the wings over Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona want to keep De Jong but are aware that the player isn’t entirely happy. The midfielder is apparently someone who is incredibly detailed with his scrutiny of himself and his team – something that isn’t working for him in Catalonia.
Barcelona continue to struggle and were knocked out of the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2000 this week. Their poor La Liga form suggests they won’t return soon, either.
Their well-documented financial woes are also an issue here. It’s hard to know when or how they’ll improve – unless they sell players like De Jong.
Thus Liverpool are waiting for a transfer. They’re big fans of De Jong and if he asks for a transfer, the Reds will be in position to offer him one.
Liverpool eye De Jong transfer
We wrote three weeks ago that De Jong would be a wonderful transfer target for Liverpool. We stand by that, too, and the Dutchman could be a perfect long-term midfield option.

But this is one that sounds a little outlandish. De Jong is on a contract until 2026 and if Barcelona don’t want to sell, it’s hard to see how he could force them to.
On the other hand, things do add up here. De Jong is at the wrong club for this period of his career, while Barcelona’s best young players play in his position. He may be their best way of drumming up transfer cash – and Liverpool would likely love to help with that.
After all, De Jong is an exceptional player and one of the few who could be a solid replacement for Thiago or Jordan Henderson. If Barcelona are there to be convinced, we imagine Liverpool really will try for a transfer.
