Liverpool are looking into a transfer for Jonathan David, according to reports. The Canadian could be the best signing of 2022.
There will be some strikers on the move in 2022. Kylian Mbappe will be out of contract, for one – potentially moving somewhere without a transfer.
Then there’s Erling Haaland. Will he leave Borussia Dortmund? It feels likely, though any deal will almost certainly be ridiculously expensive.
Liverpool may have their eyes elsewhere, however. L’Equipe claims they have eyes on Jonathan David and there’s real potential for a move.
As the report says, the striker’s contract expires in 2025 but there’s no expectation that he’ll stick with Lille until then. David would like to jump up a level at some stage – Liverpool may well give him that opportunity.
Surprisingly, David could be available for as little as £30m. Lille only paid £27m to sign him back in 2020, suggesting there are some financial struggles in play here.
And Liverpool would do well to take advantage. David could be the best transfer of 2022.
Jonathan David to Liverpool?
We’ve written quite a lot about David as he continues to develop at a rapid pace. Already, at just 21, he looks like a potential superstar.
For one, David’s arrival at Lille led to a shock Ligue 1 title in his debut season. He did very well, too, establishing himself as one of Europe’s best pressing forwards.
He really ticked several boxes that a club like Liverpool would want. He can press at a high level, he’s quick, he’s happy to drop and link play – only one thing was missing.
David scored 13 goals last season but that’s not a number that jumps out as ‘elite’. It was a debut campaign, of course, but you’d want to see a little more before jumping on him as a star signing.
This season, though, David has kicked on further and made scoring goals a key part of his game. He currently leads the Ligue 1 scoring charts, boasting the best minutes per goal ratio in the process.
David, then, is exactly the type of player Liverpool would want as their next centre-forward. For £30m, too, we can’t imagine there would be a better transfer in 2022.
There may be some for more proven players at massive prices but for £30m, Liverpool could get a 21-year-old champion who ticks every box they need.
If David continues to progress as he is, Liverpool could secure a transfer for a bargain superstar.
