Liverpool won 4-0 vs Southampton on Saturday afternoon at Anfield. Here are our picks for the Reds’ three best players on the day.

Diogo Jota

Jota’s passing was quite sloppy at times and little came off for him inside the box. He still scored two goals and was the key reason Liverpool went on to win 4-0 vs Southampton.

That’s becoming a running theme with Jota as even his ‘bad’ days see him score one or two. It’s a magnificent trait to have and a sign of a confident player – it takes a lot to knock him off his game.

Of course, both his goals were tap-ins with a combined distance of about eight yards. His wonderful knack for being in the right place paid off once again, as it did against Arsenal.

Jota is, in a lot of ways, the perfect addition to Liverpool’s title-winning team. He doesn’t need the ball to be a threat, presses like mad and is proving to be as reliable as it gets.

Alisson

Southampton struggle to score goals, playing at roughly seven goals below their xG. It meant the plan was to attack them from the off and make it impossible for them to compete.

Liverpool did that very well but there were times where they tried very, very hard to make things easier on the Saints. Some strange decisions at the back let them in on several occasions.

Fortunately, Alisson put in another great display at the back, saving a few blushes in this one. One unfortunate goal against West Ham aside, the Brazilian has been virtually perfect this season.

Andy Robertson

We’ll say this was Robertson’s best performance of the season so far. He was ready to go from minute one, setting up the opener for Jota.

In total, the Scot created four chances in this one – the most of anyone on the pitch (per Whoscored). He was very unfortunate to only finish with that one assist, in fact, and his efforts deserved at least one more.

This was Robertson at his best, though. More energy than you can believe, solid enough at the back, and a constant force going forward. With Kostas Tsimikas breathing down his neck for the left-back spot, Robertson stepped up to show he’s still the best around.
