Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson have a special partnership at Liverpool right now and we saw it in one moment vs Porto. The Reds can count on the duo to make things happen.
Liverpool beat Porto fairly comfortably on Wednesday evening, picking up a 2-0 win with a pair of fantastic goals. The first really caught the eye, of course.
Thiago hit a strike as sweet as anything you’ll see this season, cutting the grass as the ball swept into the bottom corner. But it wasn’t the only notable goal.
Mohamed Salah also found the net for his 17th of the campaign. It featured some wonderful play with Jordan Henderson – the two have a fantastic partnership growing.
Henderson & Salah combine for moment vs Porto
In the 69th minute, Tyler Morton fired a high pass over the Porto defence for Salah. The Egyptian eventually controlled the ball on the right flank and sized up the full-back.
Henderson then drifted across the take the ball from Salah, immediately getting the full-back’s attention with it. Liverpool’s no.11 then drifted into the area unmarked, received a pass from his captain and scored a wonderful finish.
It was a simple combination but the formality of it all shows off this little combination brilliantly. Neither hesitated for a moment – they carved open the Porto defence for a great Liverpool goal.
That’s something we’re seeing more and more this season. Liverpool are creating a lot down their right flank, with Henderson, Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold all moving in and out of each other’s space.
This goal was a fine demonstration of that, with Salah starting wide, swapping with Henderson, and finding space inside to score.
Obviously, Salah is just thriving with it as he’s scored 17 goals and picked up seven assists. Alexander-Arnold has eight assists on top of that.
Henderson doesn’t boast those same raw numbers – two goals, three assists – but more detailed stats show his impact. Per FBref, he’s creating far more chances per 90 than he ever had.
Henderson has never averaged one chance created per 90 but this season, he’s at 1.72. It’s a massive leap.
And the captain is helping to create shots at a higher rate than ever before. He’s involved in creating 2.92 shots per 90 in the Premier League – by far his highest ever rate. In fact, that’s slightly above Sadio Mane.
The Henderson / Salah partnership is working like a charm, then. Add Alexander-Arnold to the mix and the Reds boast a creative outlet that few teams can stop.
Even with just two of them on the pitch vs Porto – and only for 25 minutes – Liverpool created a wonderful moment.
