Liverpool could repeat Old Trafford trick after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang update

An update on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could tempt Liverpool into trying a trick that worked at Old Trafford. The Arsenal star had been a doubt.

Liverpool host Arsenal on Saturday in a massive fixture. The Gunners are in fantastic form lately, after all, while the Reds have dropped points.

Jurgen Klopp will want his side to get back to winning ways ahead of the busy Christmas period, though. A top run of form from here would be massive in the title race.

But that’s easier said than done. Especially after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was confirmed fit to play at Anfield, per the Daily Mail. There had been suggestions that he would miss the fixture.

We imagine he’ll start the game, then. And with that, we wonder if Klopp will turn back to a trick that worked at Old Trafford.

Aubameyang to face Liverpool

Arsenal are a decent side in possession but we expect them to give up the ball to Liverpool. That’s typically how they’ve played against top sides this season, with some okay results.

Thus they would look to get Aubameyang in on the counter-attack. It’s similar to what we thought Manchester United would do at Old Trafford – only, they didn’t.

United made the pretty wild decision to actually press Liverpool high. It didn’t work, because that’s madness, and they lost 5-0.

But Liverpool set up to stop a predicted counter-attack and that saw Klopp make a surprising choice at the back. He started Ibrahima Konate – someone we hadn’t seen for over a month.

Konate is a big, powerful, rapid centre-back. His positional sense isn’t quite at the elite level yet but he has the raw tools to stop counter-attacks. He handled United’s pace with relative ease, in fact, once they did try and go direct.

So with Aubameyang fit and the obvious choice for Arsenal up top, we wonder if Liverpool will start Konate again. It seems like the smart move to us, given his great performance at Old Trafford.

As Arsenal look to unleash Aubameyang on the break, Konate could thrive once again.
