Rio Ferdinand wants to see Manchester United signing Jude Bellingham but Liverpool should get there first. The 18-year-old could be a dream addition.
It’s pretty clear that Rio Ferdinand rates Jude Bellingham very, very highly. The ex-England defender praised the teenager as a near-unique midfielder this week.
“I think for [Bellingham], I see him as being someone who can do it all,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel. “There aren’t many midfielders in the game now that can attack and defend – affect the game at both ends.
“When you are one of the super clubs, there are talents out there that make you think if we have the capacity and financial muscle, then he’s one you don’t want to miss.”
We wholeheartedly agree and it’s really the primary reason why we think Liverpool should move heaven and earth to sign Bellingham. The teenager fits them like a glove.
Ferdinand right on Bellingham
Ferdinand mentions how few midfielders can do it all these days and that’s absolutely right. Modern football has seen a shift away from do-it-all midfielders as they move towards specialists.
They tend to be playmakers or destroyers or holding players, rather than single players who try to do a bit of everything. Liverpool, though, have not followed that trend.
Jurgen Klopp’s best team saw Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum either side of a holding midfielder. Henderson and Wijnaldum are both players who are comfortable in any midfield role, be it pushing forward or holding.
They can cover the full-backs, they can play a possession game, they’re energetic on the counter-attack and they’ll defend doggedly.
There really aren’t too many elite midfielders like that. We imagine it’s part of the reason Liverpool didn’t replace Wijnaldum and instead went with Thiago as a first-XI option. The Spaniard is a specialist with the ball, rather than an all-around midfielder – he’s just a world-class specialist.
But in Bellingham, there’s a teenager who already shows he can do it all to a great level. That’s remarkable and unbelievably rare – just finding a player who can do it is difficult, let alone at 18.
Bellingham isn’t just an elite talent then, but a great fit for exactly what Liverpool want to do. It’s why we tip him as the Reds’ first £100m signing.
They reportedly want the player, per Sport1, and that’s no surprise – Bellingham could be perfect.
