'Like a coach': Tom Clayton struck by what he's seen from Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool Under 23s star Tom Clayton picked out Virgil van Dijk as a training standout. The Dutchman left a serious impression on the youngster.

Liverpool Under 23s captain Tom Clayton says it’s ‘unbelievable’ how good things are in senior training. It’s a learning experience for him every time.

And some players stand out more than others. One of those is Virgil van Dijk, who Clayton says is ‘like a coach’ in training.

Clayton on Van Dijk

“On the occasions I have got up there, it is unbelievable,” he told The Scotsman.

“You just need to look at them for five minutes and you’ll learn so much about how they train and apply themselves.

“Andy Robertson definitely is one, Virgil is another — just the way he drives the session. He is like a coach on the pitch during the session.

“Those are guys you can look to and say: ‘I’ll take a lot from that’.”

It’s always fantastic to hear how the current generation of stars influence the next. In fact, we had Conor Bradley waxing lyrical over Mohamed Salah in recent days.

It creates a magnificent environment for young players to develop and thrive. And, if there’s a commitment to building around these youngsters, you can guarantee professionalism at the club for years to come.

We think Liverpool are well on their way to doing just that. The likes of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott carry rave reviews about their attitudes. A huge part of that comes from their experience with the current stars.

As for Clayton, he’s eyeing a move away from training with the seniors. He admits to The Scotsman that he’d quite like a loan away in order to pick up real experience.

“Definitely,” he said about a wanting a loan. “That is something that is on my mind. We’ll need to see what happens and what the club has in mind.

“It’s not only up to me. There are other people involved.”
