Juventus want Axel Witsel from Borussia Dortmund, according to reports. Such a move would surely end Liverpool hopes of Jude Bellingham next summer.
This comes from Bild. They claim that Juventus are eyeing up Axel Witsel as the Belgian’s contract expires.
Witsel’s deal ends in June and Borussia Dortmund planned on renewing it. Instead, Juventus could turn his head and a move for Witsel may even happen as soon as January.
Witsel, now 32, is a midfield regular for Dortmund. Losing him would be a big miss, even if his sizeable wages would clear space.
And for both of those reasons, Liverpool would see their Jude Bellingham chances suffer.
Axel Witsel to Juventus?
Liverpool supposedly want Bellingham. Sport1 carry quotes from Dortmund director Sebastian Kehl admitting as much.
And there’s little doubt that he’d be a fantastic signing. In fact, we believe that Bellingham probably should be Liverpool’s first £100m signing.
But the chances of that happening drastically go down if Juventus sign Witsel.
Dortmund would lose one starting midfield and we can’t imagine they’d let another leave in the same year. Talk that Erling Haaland could leave, too, reduces Dortmund’s desire to gut their squad.
While getting Witsel’s wages off the books also means they don’t need the money. Obviously, £100m would be nice but they’re just as likely to get it a year later – maybe even more so.
If Witsel remains with the club, Bellingham could well be off. Or at the very least, Liverpool could tempt Dortmund with a sizeable offer – be that £100m or not.
It’s the only scenario where we think that’s possible in 2022, however. It just doesn’t make sense for Dortmund if the Belgian leaves.
2023 and beyond? Perhaps Liverpool could make something happen if they’re prepared to wait. But 2022 now feels very, very unlikely.
