Jurgen Klopp teased Thiago’s return date on Friday. The Spaniard hasn’t played for Liverpool since September 18th.
It hasn’t been Thiago’s season so far. It took him time to get going after starting the campaign with an injury but only two starts came and went before he was out again.
In fact, we’ve only seen 196 minutes of Thiago in a Liverpool shirt this season. Not exactly what we were hoping for when Gini Wijnaldum left the club.
After all, Thiago is the obvious replacement in Liverpool’s first-choice XI. The club’s lack of signings this summer pretty much confirmed that.
And so we want to see Thiago playing regularly again. We just want to see him play a few injury-free, actually, given he played all of last season with a problem.
Fortunately, that time might be on its way. Thiago returned to full training this week and while his match-fitness isn’t there yet, he’s not too far from a return.
That’s according to Jurgen Klopp, anyway.
Klopp teases Thiago’s return
“Until we see him at his absolute best, it is probably [after the international break], because he needs to train,” Klopp said, per the Liverpool Echo.
“But we have three games in between now and then, so I would not rule him out for the next games if he trains normally.
“Is he ready to get minutes? Maybe.
“If I go downstairs now to the sports science department and they tell me everything looked like he could go for 60 minutes and I say ‘well let’s have a look if we can use him tomorrow'”.
We might just see Thiago later today, then. We won’t bet on it or anything – and our guess is that he doesn’t feature – but it’s encouraging to hear that he’s close.
Maybe, finally, we can see Thiago get a run of games before long. He’s an ingredient that could make this soaring Liverpool side improve even further.
