Manchester United will have to pay particular attention to Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold could be Liverpool’s biggest threat against Manchester United on Sunday. The 23-year-old may well thrive in the game.

Manchester United should worry about Trent Alexander-Arnold on Sunday. The right-back will almost certainly start for Liverpool – save for another injury – and could well be the Reds’ star man.

There will be plenty of attention on the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, of course. Both are playing wonderfully well and the Egyptian is currently the best player in the Premier League – maybe the world.

But that creates a double problem for United. Their focus on Salah could well unlock Alexander-Arnold.

Alexander-Arnold vs Manchester United

United faced Atalanta on Wednesday evening and while they eventually won the game, the Italians showed them up a bit. Two first-half goals exposed the hosts.

One of them, in particular, will be a worry. Atalanta scored their first goal by creating an overload on the right-hand side, opening up United’s flank for an overlapping wing-back.

That’s essentially what Liverpool will try and do on Sunday. Salah will draw attention from Luke Shaw, while United’s two-man holding midfield can’t afford to drift over and cover the space in front.

They’ll also attack United’s flank whenever Shaw attempts to get forward. The threat of Salah may keep him at bay for 90 minutes but we doubt it.

It all means that Alexander-Arnold will be able to push forward if the left-winger doesn’t track him. That’s a particular problem for United as they typically play with a very attacking winger.

We don’t expect they’d risk Cristiano Ronaldo out wide and it’ll likely be Marcus Rashford as it was on Wednesday. There’s an outside chance of Paul Pogba, too, but that softens United’s counter-attacking pace.

This is the problem with playing such an attacking formation. If United don’t add a third covering midfielder or pull their wingers back, Liverpool can create overlaps for fun.

With such a defensive full-back in Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back, Liverpool’s left may not find the same luxury. But against Shaw? The Reds will want to get Alexander-Arnold moving beyond him as often as possible.

And unless United change things, the 23-year-old should have a field day as one of the most creative players in the Premier League.
