Liverpool can consider themselves quite fortunate after Diogo Jota picked up a muscle injury with Portugal. Things may have sorted themselves.
Liverpool just can’t escape injuries. Last season was a notable disaster as the Reds lost every senior centre-back option before Jordan Henderson missed the final three months of the season.
There were long-term problems for Thiago and Diogo Jota, too, among others.
This season has been nowhere near as bad, of course, but there are still issues. Thiago, once again, can’t stay fit and Harvey Elliott will be gone for the foreseeable future. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been out a couple of times already. Naby Keita even hurt himself kicking the grass.
The latest player to pick up a problem is Diogo Jota. The Portugal forward has a muscle problem and returned to Liverpool after he was ruled out of his country’s final game this international break.
It now looks doubtful that he plays against Watford on Saturday. Perhaps he recovers in time but will Liverpool risk him? That remains to be seen.
Fortunately, a slice of luck may have helped out here. The Reds may be able to rest Jota when they otherwise couldn’t.
Jota picks up muscle injury
Jota may drop out of the starting XI but Roberto Firmino should be completely ready to replace him. It’s simply good fortune that allows for that, though.
Firmino isn’t with Brazil after they decided he hadn’t played enough football this season, per Globo. It means he’s remained on Merseyside this week.
If he had been with Brazil, however, Firmino almost certainly couldn’t have featured on Saturday. The Selecao play late on Thursday evening and may not get back in time – a problem Jurgen Klopp saw coming.
Liverpool have a bit of fortune there, then. Jota picking up his knock without Firmino there to cover would have severely weakened the team. Especially as Fabinho and Alisson are both major doubts as they’re with Brazil.
Obviously, better fortune would be if Jota didn’t get injured at all – but injuries do happen. Firmino not being with Brazil, however, is
