Virgil van Dijk believes everyone should go about life the way Joel Matip does. The Dutchman is clearly a huge fan of his Liverpool teammate.
It’s no secret that Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are wonderful together. Certainly, on the pitch, the duo led Liverpool to the UEFA Champions League trophy and have been consistently brilliant as a pairing.
But they’re also brilliant together off the pitch. We’ve seen them literally wearing T-Shirts bearing one another’s face during pre-season. It’s pretty clear they get on spectacularly well.
There’s also deep respect there, however – you need only listen to Van Dijk talk about Matip to learn that.
Van Dijk on Matip
Van Dijk talked about his teammate to Liverpoolfc.com, discussing what it was like being back alongside the Cameroonian. The two of them lost out on a season together last season, of course, after a series of unfortunate injuries.
The Dutchman is clearly thrilled that they’re back together, though.
“[Joel] is a special, special character and we all appreciate him in our group,” said Van Dijk. “Not only for his qualities – because he’s an unbelievable defender – but as a human being as well.
“He’s how everyone should take life, I think – very easy, be nice and put a lot of things in perspective. We all appreciate him.”
You can’t really ask for more from teammates. Not only are they brilliant together but they admire one another. Or at least, Van Dijk admires Matip – we’re just assuming it’s mutual.
But we really believe that this kind of relationship goes a long way to explaining their incredible success. You perform better when you work with people you admire – that’s the same in any line of work.
Football is no different and this kind of atmosphere is incredibly apparent throughout the Liverpool squad.
