Over the summer Liverpool worked hard to tie down key stars to new long term contracts. The Reds only signed the one player but retaining key stars appeared to be more of a priority than bringing in fresh faces. According to a report in Germany, Naby Keita won’t sign a new Liverpool contract until he is given more game time.
Liverpool contract spree
This summer was a frustrating one for Kopites but, as ever, it looks as though Michael Edwards and co knew best.
Whilst fans pleaded for new signings the club shut out the noise and worked on renewals.
Alisson Becker agreed an extension running until 2027.
Signing on until 2026 we had Fabinho and Andy Robertson.
Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Nat Phillips and Trent Alexander-Arnold penned deals until 2025.
Naby Keita on new Liverpool contract
Our frustrating Guinean midfielder is another on the list of pending renewals.
His current deal runs until 2023 and given his injury woes we wouldn’t make money selling him. As a result the club will be looking to extend in order to get the best out of him eventually.
According to Christian Falk for Bild, Naby Keita won’t sign a new Liverpool contract until he’s given a more prominent role in the squad.
The ex-Leipzig man is allegedly keen to stay at Anfield but he wants to play.
What RTK has to say
Liverpool tying Naby Keita down to a new deal is incredibly important.
If we don’t then we risk a huge loss on the club record fee we paid for him.
He could come good eventually but until then there’s no point selling him, as a result a new deal is immensely important.
We’ll figure it out soon, if he can stay fit he just needs to take his chances.
