"Greatest of all time": Fans react to van Dijk contract extension

Liverpool have announced that Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract at the club.

The Dutch centre-back has signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2025.

So, his three-and-a-half year stay at Anfield will continue, in what is a massive boost to the side.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, van Dijk said: “All the hard work we’ve put in so far continues and I am looking forward to what the future brings together with Liverpool. I’m delighted, very happy and proud.

“I have enjoyed my time here and will keep enjoying it in the next couple of years altogether with all of you.

“I think Liverpool is arguably the biggest club in the world with the best fans, I think, in the world, so I enjoy playing for the club.

“The Premier League starts this weekend and I can’t wait to be out there and get back to my best.”

Van Dijk contract excellent news for Liverpool

After already tying down Alisson, Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold to new deals this summer, van Dijk’s extension is the latest positive for the club.

It is clear that Liverpool are focusing on ensuring that the world-class players already at the club stay on for the long-term, rather than signing new ones.

Van Dijk could well be the most important extension.

We know that he is coming back after almost a year out, but if he does get back to his best, he is still the best centre-back in the world.

While he is 30-years-old now, we would back him to maintain this level until his mid-thirties.

Having a world-class centre-back in the side will ensure that the Reds are competitive for the next few years at least.

How did fans react?

Fans on social media have understandably been ecstatic with this news.

Van Dijk is arguably the most popular star at the club, so the fact that he will be a Liverpool player for at least four more years is massive.
