Last season Liverpool faced a crisis like none other. The Reds lost key players in their droves, a run of injuries that made finishing third look like winning the Tour de France on foot. One of the heroes of that campaign is yet to make an appearance this term. Gary Gillespie believes that Nat Phillips must be looking to leave Liverpool.
All hail the Bolton Baresi
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were ruled out for the season by early November last term.
Given the late start to the campaign the season was barely underway.
Jürgen Klopp turned to Nat Phillips just weeks after the Lancashire lad’s move to Swansea collapsed at the last minute.
The youngster stepped up and stood out. Nat Phillips earned the moniker the Bolton Baresi.
His aerial ability was a wonder to behold and he truly became the saviour of our season. We couldn’t have finished third without him.
Gary Gillespie on Nat Phillips
This season the Bolton Baresi is yet to make an appearance.
The 24-year-old was expected to leave over the summer but no such move materialised.
Since then he’s found himself fifth in the pecking order behind Virgil, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip.
“He had a big part to play, but that’s the way football is. They went and bought a big centre-back in Konate and you have got four top-class individuals ahead of you. He probably knows that himself and he is probably looking elsewhere at this moment in time.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool owe Nat Phillips appearances in the cups at least.
If we’re going to sell him in January or even over the summer then he’ll need to put himself in the shop window. He can’t do that from the bench.
The Bolton Baresi will surely be a regular starter somewhere this time next year.
