Report: Zlatan Ibrahimovic set for return ahead of historic Liverpool clash

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in line to face Liverpool, according to reports. The Swede hasn’t featured for AC Milan in some time.

This comes from Milan News. They claim Zlatan Ibrahimovic should return for Milan this weekend as they take on Lazio.

Ibrahimovic hasn’t featured since the final few weeks of last season. He picked up a knee injury against Juventus that ruled him out of Milan’s entire pre-season. He is training, however, and apparently feels good ahead of the weekend.

A successful return should also see the player travel to Merseyside next week. That promises to be a historic game as it will be the very first time Milan play at Anfield.

Bizarrely, the seven-time European champions have never played away at Liverpool in the competition. That’s despite the two sides competing in two finals against one another.

Next week, however, that will finally change.

Ibrahimovic to face Liverpool?

We have Ibrahimovic down as one of the player’s Liverpool should fear in this Champions League group. Yes, he’s 39 but the Swede’s goal record remains magnificent.

The legendary striker bagged 15 goals in 19 Serie A matches last season – a phenomenal record. Liverpool will need to be at their best to stop him.

This also comes as a welcome boost for Milan after Olivier Giroud tested positive for Covid-19. The Frenchman is out as a result and Milan almost desperately need Ibrahimovic for huge back-to-back games.

His battle with Virgil van Dijk promises to be a very interesting one – presuming they both play. It’ll be the world’s best centre-back up against one of the most dangerous strikers of the last 20 years.

Ibrahimovic certainly can’t match him for athleticism anymore but for intelligence and know-how? That should be fun to watch. So while Liverpool would have an easier ride without the Swede, we can’t help but admit to being a little happy that he could play.
