Alberto Moreno has claimed he turned down a five-year Liverpool contract

Unfortunate Alberto the Blame-o

29-year-old Spaniard Alberto Moreno played for Liverpool for five seasons.

In August 2014 he arrived at the club full of potential and promise.

Plenty of Kopites will remember a goal he scored against Spurs after a marauding run down the left flank.

However, over the years he became something of a scape goat.

It was clear that he was a much better winger than he was a defender.

On the front foot he could be devastating at times with his pace leaving opposition defenders in the dust.

Out of possession Albie was found wanting with plenty of goals conceded down his flank.

Eventually Andy Robbo took over the left back role when Moreno picked up an ankle injury, the Scotland captain never gave his place up and the Spaniard left on a free transfer in 2019.

Alberto Moreno on Liverpool exit

By the end of his contract it was clear there was no place in the side for Alberto Moreno.

Andy Robertson had matured into one of the best full backs in world football.

As a result it came as no surprise when Albie headed for Villareal on a free transfer.

Speaking to El Periodico Mediterraneo Alberto Moreno has said Liverpool offered him a new contract but he turned it down:

“In my fifth year, I was offered to renew, but for another five years. I said no. We’d had many years in England.

“I have three children and spoke with my wife, and we decided that the best thing was to return to Spain. I just wanted to go back to Spain.”

What RTK has to say

Can you blame him? The weather is rubbish in Liverpool. Even worse when you’re on the bench.

He’d made his millions and he had a Champions League winners’ medal. Why not head home?

Whilst he was a scapegoat during his time at Liverpool we can remember him fondly now.

He’s also completely won Kopites over since his departure with how he reacted to beating Manchester United in the Europa League final.
