Liverpool fans haven’t had much to cheer this season. Just finishing in the top four has become an immense achievement after all of our problems. Thankfully the end of the season has handed us some schadenfreude to indulge in. Liverpool fans have praised Alberto Moreno after he broke Manchester United hearts in the Europa League final.
Alberto Moreno at Liverpool
Liverpool signed Alberto Moreno for £12m in the summer of 2014.
The Spanish left back joined from Sevilla and he had us all excited when he netted an impressive goal against Spurs just a fortnight after joining the club.
The defender’s time at Anfield was marred by a consistent theme of his attacking prowess being rendered irrelevant by his defensive frailties.
Too often was he caught wanting on the back foot and this eventually prompted the club to bring in Andy Robertson.
The now Scotland captain ousted Moreno from the starting XI and, after winning the Champions League final in Madrid, the Spaniard was released by the Reds.
Alberto Moreno defeats Manchester United
This week saw Villareal take on Manchester United in the Europa League final.
The Spanish side finished seventh in the Spanish La Liga this term, many thought the Red Devils would steam roll them.
However, a drab affair ensued, one in which the Spaniards took the lead in the first half before Edinson Cavani levelled 10 minutes into the second half.
The boring game ended 1-1 and headed into an extraordinary penalty shootout.
Villareal beat Manchester United 11-10 on penalties with every player but David De Gea converting their spot kicks.
