Liverpool only signed one player during the summer transfer window. The Reds decided against further investment despite cashing in on a raft of players. The decision has frustrated plenty of Kopites. Liverpool reportedly considered signing Marcel Sabitzer, fans have reacted to the claim.
Why do Liverpool need a midfielder?
This summer we saw an Anfield icon depart the club.
Gini Wijnaldum ended his five-year stay with Liverpool.
The Dutchman’s contract expired and he joined PSG on a free transfer.
During his time on Merseyside no player racked up more minutes for Jürgen Klopp.
The Dutchman was a reliable presence in the centre of midfield, rarely missing a game whilst those around him regularly picked up injuries.
That kind of reliability is crucial for a title winning side.
Given the injury record of the rest of the midfield many Liverpool fans see signing a replacement for Gini as essential.
Liverpool considered Marcel Sabitzer
The Reds apparently had a few players in mind over the summer.
Goal has claimed Liverpool considered a move for Marcel Sabitzer.
The Austrian midfielder entered the final year of his contract with RB Leipzig over the summer and seemed intent on not signing an extension.
Eventually Bayern Munich swept in and signed the midfielder for around £13m.
Sabitzer would’ve been an ideal signing for Liverpool.
He is reliable and versatile, two traits which Jürgen Klopp rates highly.
The 27-year-old could be deployed at centre midfield or even on the right wing.
This kind of versatility would’ve proved extremely handy in the face of an injury crisis.
Plenty of Kopites are frustrated we didn’t move whilst others think the report is a PR stunt.
