Liverpool fans were left disheartened when the transfer window slammed shut. The Reds didn’t do much business at all. One signing was made and a raft of fringe players left the club. According to Goal, Liverpool considered signing Marcel Sabitzer before Bayern Munich swooped in.
Who is Marcel Sabitzer?
27-year-old Austrian Marcel Sabitzer is a versatile player.
The Bundesliga man spent the past six years at RB Leipzig having joined from Salzburg in 2015.
During his time at Leipzig he played no fewer than eight positions according to Transfermarkt.
Most commonly deployed as a centre midfielder in recent seasons, he spent the first portion of career in Germany on the right wing.
Aside from his versatility the Austrian is also known for his ability to hold onto the ball, his stamina and his eye for goal.
Liverpool considered Marcel Sabitzer
This summer Bayern Munich signed the Leipzig man for around £13m.
The Austrian was in the final year of his deal with Leipzig and was thought to be against signing an extension.
According to Goal, Liverpool considered moving for Marcel Sabitzer before the German giants swooped in.
The Reds are short of a reliable midfielder following Gini Wijnaldum’s move to PSG.
What RTK has to say
Liverpool signing Sabitzer would’ve made plenty of sense.
He has mountains of senior experience and is incredibly versatile.
The boss values versatility highly. Bringing in a player capable of playing as many positions as Sabitzer would’ve killed a few birds with one stone.
Unfortunately, Bayern have something of a monopoly over the top talents in Germany.
