Jurgen Klopp says he laughed after witnessing Liverpool’s Champions League draw on Thursday. The Reds got a tough one.
The UEFA Champions League draw happened on Thursday. We wrote a piece beforehand on possible best and worst-case scenarios for Liverpool.
And as it happened, that worst-case pretty much came true. We had it down as Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, RB Leipzig and AC Milan.
Swap out Leipzig for FC Porto and you’ve got the group. This isn’t going to be an easy one.
There are the Spanish champions in Atletico – and the team that knocked Liverpool out in 2020 – as well as last season’s quarter-finalists, Porto. Milan were quite comfortably the strongest team in Pot 4, too.
It’s not a group that allows for much rotation. In fact, Liverpool should probably react to this with a reconsideration of their squad depth.
But that’s just our opinion. For how Liverpool really reacted, we can turn to Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp reacts to Champions League draw
“I laughed, to be honest, pretty loud because it is a tough group obviously,” said Klopp, per the Liverpool Echo. “It’s Champions League, so that’s how it is, and you have to play the best teams in Europe, and obviously some of them are in our group.
“We played, I don’t know how often, already against Porto, so they will be waiting for us. We have obviously a little bit of [an] open bill with Atletico, and AC Milan, a historical one obviously.
“So, I think our supporters should be looking forward to it – we do, for sure.”
We’re looking forward to it, too. These will be six interesting games – they just won’t be routine.
Routine games usually help at this stage as they allow for rotation. Not only do you get easy progression but clubs can focus all of their attention on the league. It’s the easiest way to compete in both.
Liverpool won’t have that luxury, however. The games are something to look forward to, certainly. We just hope to be smiling at the end.
