21/22 Champions League draw: Liverpool's best & worst possible groups

The 21/22 UEFA Champions League draw is today. Liverpool sit in Pot 2 but who could they draw? We look at the best and worst possible outcomes.

Liverpool won’t be in Pot 1 for the 21/22 Champions League Group Stage draw. That’s the first time since 2019, unfortunately.

But that isn’t actually as bad as it usually is. Surprise winners in Italy, France and Spain mean Pot 1 isn’t as strong as you’d expect.

Liverpool can’t get Manchester City or Chelsea, of course. Their potential opponents from that Pot are Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Lille, Inter, Villarreal and Sporting.

So with that in mind, what is the best possible outcome for the draw? And what about the worst?

Best possible group

You’d have to say that either Lille or Sporting is the weakest side in that pot. Lille did win Ligue 1 last season but they immediately lost their manager and goalkeeper – it’s not the same team.

Sporting, on the other hand, haven’t been a strong side for a very long time. They’re still not ‘elite’, or at least they haven’t proven themselves to be.

We’ll go for Lille as the best possible draw, though, as they haven’t won any of their opening three games.

From Pot 3, we’ll got Red Bull Salzburg as the team to get. They’re arguably the smallest club in the pot, plus they lost star player Patson Daka this summer.

Pot 4 is an easy one – Sheriff Tiraspol. The side are the Moldovan champions and one of the smallest to ever get this far.

Worst possible group

Two teams stand out in Pot 1 – Bayern and Atletico. The Bavarians are arguably stronger, and certainly have more European pedigree, but they aren’t our pick here.

That’s because we have RB Leipzig down as the best side in Pot 3. They’re the only ones we think might push Liverpool. As they’re German, Bayern can’t be in the same group as them.

The second-best might be Atalanta. We’re just not sure they’d be as strong as last year, while their inclusion would rule out our Pot 4 choice.

That’s undoubtedly AC Milan. No, they’re not what they once were but they’re a massive side with some very good players. No one will want them.
