Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Jordan Henderson and Thiago may feature for Liverpool in Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley.
The midfield duo were left out of the squad to play Norwich City on the opening day. They were both late back to pre-season due to their commitments at Euro 2020.
Both players needed an extended break in order to get their bodies into prime condition for the new season and they featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa last Sunday as part of their preparation.
However, Klopp has now confirmed that they are available to feature against Sean Dyche’s side.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Klopp said: “They are much closer, they look fine.
“Now we have to make the decision.
“They looked really good in the game (vs Aston Villa) and looked really good in the training week so it’s up to me to make some decisions.”
Henderson and Thiago returns will be a big boost
The fact that both players seem ready to go is excellent news for Liverpool.
They are two of the absolute best midfielders in the world when available, so their return will be a huge boost.
Whether they start or not is another question.
Liverpool beat Norwich 3-0 with a midfield three of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Klopp now knows that he can rely on that trio to win games, so Henderson and Thiago do not have to be rushed.
We expected Fabinho to be a guaranteed starter after his substitute appearance last weekend. However, the heartbreaking news broke this morning that his father has passed away, so the Brazilian may sit out this one.
If so, then it seems like one of Henderson and Thiago will start. That is because Klopp said in his press conference that changes will be made “for intensity reasons”.
We believe that Naby Keita will start, but who partners him is anyone’s guess.
No matter what, Liverpool have the quality to win the game. But there is no denying that having Henderson and Thiago in the side would be a huge help.
